Week 13

Well this is the last post for DIGC202...it's kind of sad. We discussed the 'Internet of Things' this week and it was an...interesting...topic. I think that it is really cool how everyday objects can be incorporated with the internet. I think it would be cool to have a refrigerator that knows what is inside of it, but the Ericcson video personally creeped me out. When I saw it the first thing I thought of was the Disney Channel Original Movie, Smart House. In the movie the house is 'smart' and can communicate with the family. The house cooks dinner, cleans, and eventually develops a personality. The house thinks it is part of the family and evolves into a holographic image. It just takes over everything and they have to shut it down. Yes, having our everyday items connected to the internet may seem cool, but what if they do evolve? I don't want my house to revolt on me. Maybe it would be OK if some things were connected to the internet, but I do not think it is necessary for everything to be connected to the internet. My house should not have a personality I can socialize with.

  1. Love this post, I thought the exact same thing and even used the same words about technological revolt. Objects should be objects. I was thinking about the emotional attachment I get to my phone and TV etc but when I upgrade I don't give it a second thought. If an old appliance had the capacity to communicate with me and store information of our time together I can imagine it doing a playback of all our fond memories and me not being able to move on. I would be stuck with old technology due to emotional blackmail. Not ideal at all.

  2. Because of Internet and technology things, our life has changed a lot. I think it is good thing that people can gain the value information from the Internet and exchange opinions online. However, it may leads to some problems. For instance, Facebook was involved in private issue. We argue that the line between private and public becomes blurry. In a sense, I agree with you. I am just thinking the same thing with you; it would be difficult that my life has completed controlled by technology things. People do not have alleged personal life if people always connect to Internet. As Lauren mentioned that objects should be objects.

  3. I totally agree. Having your appliances and devices evolve would be like in the movie g-force where the appliances try to take over. or Skynet in Terminator. It's way scary to think this might eventually happen to us o.O

  4. My question is if your house can socialize, and you get a new object in your house, what happens if the doesn't like it? Thats worse than a controlling girlfriend. I like the comment about emotional attachment, we should write a Toy Story-esque script about how people up grade their phones and the old ones feel left out haha

  5. I'm all for inanimate objects cooking and cleaning for me, but its when they develop a personality that bothers me. And while we're on the topic of cultural references, think the The Simpsons, Treehouse of Horrors. I have decided to never get a house that does my chores for me because it will probably fall in love with my wife and try to kill me.

  6. I think that the technology we have, if used well can be really helpful. It is amazing to see the ways in which tings are connected to the internet now, but also to see all the possibilities of potential future scenarios as well. I dont think we will ever get to the stage were the technology will become so much like a person that it will act and behave of its own accord. The idea of machines connected to the internet is just a Hollywood movie script, not real life

  7. I agree, not everything should be connected to the internet, if every object knows/ studies your personality and was able to respond to it, it would be so creepy. What happens one day if you didn't threw your garbage out, and your house locked you outside and don't let you in, say probably until you decide to re-paint your house (as an apology?). By then, the people would be the machines working for the objects rather than the other way around which it should be.

  8. it is sad we have come to the end of what seemed at times to be a long but enjoyable era.
i am now tossing up whether or not i should keep my twitter account as shameful as it is i am kind of attached to in now... and what of my blogging? i found it hard to blog about topics every week im not going to lie, but there where the occasional week that i would really get into it and so pleased when people commented! I feel i have been given a voice through the internet even if it began unvoluntarily the question now is do i keep it?
